WILLMAR - The Willmar Cardinals completed a charitable weekend losing in overtime to the Brainerd Warriors 77-73 on Friday evening.
The Cardinals could be expected to pick up a pair of wins when the week began.
After all, Sauk Rapids was winless in the Central Lakes and Brainerd came into the Cardinal court with one CLC win.
“That’s what makes it frustrating,” said coach Dustin Carlson. “We were playing two teams that were struggling.”
Willmar led 29-25 at halftime but needed a clutch 3-pointer from Heather Horning to get it into overtime.
On a set play, Horning released the long shot from the corner in front of the Cardinal bench. It cleared the net with :02 showing and time ran out with the scored knotted 62-all.
“That shot gave us momentum but then Heather got her fifth foul with about three minutes left in overtime and we lost focus without here; she was our leader tonight,” said Carlson.
The Warriors outscored the Cards 15-11 in the extra period.
Brainerd junior guard Marie West had 7 points in the extra period and ended up with 32 for the night.
Willmar had a big advantage on the boards, 53-37 in rebounds, led by Anne Dunham with 10, Horning with 9 and McKenzie Hastad at 8.
Brainerd’s edge was in fewer turnovers and at the free-throw line where the visitors made 28 of 38 (74 percent).
  Dunham finished with 20 points, Horning 13, Courtney Magnuson 12 and Hastad and Kally Fosso 9 apiece.
Katelyn Johnson was next for Brainerd (2-10, 3-16) with 16.
