MANKATO - The Mankato East/Loyola Cougars scored a shorthanded goal in the eighth minute of the second overtime to deflect Willmar’s upset bid 4-3 on Saturday at All Season’s Arena in the Section 2A semifinals.
Willmar was 7 seconds into a player-advantage nearing the end of the second extra period when Mankato East/Loyola’s Maddi McCargar broke loose to beat Willmar netminder Madison Sandberg at 7:07, the 66th minute of game time.
The Cardinals’ senior goalie nonetheless capped her only year as the varsity starter with a phenomenal performance.
The Willmar goalie was under assault all game, a 21-3 shot differential in the second period alone.
“Maddie kept us in the game,” Willmar head coach JaColby Anderson said.
The No. 2 seeded Cougars (22-5) would end up with a 65-19 advantage in shots on goal, yet the game was tied after each period in regulation and after the first overtime.
Unassisted goals by Riley Schneider in the first and Miranda Roelofs in the second period gave Willmar leads but each time the Cougars responded with a goal in the 15th minute of the stanza to tie it up.
The Cougars got their first lead when Rebekah Kolstad scored for the second time at 4:20 of the third. Time was winding down when Shelby Schneider beat Cougar cageminder Katie Paulson with under seven minutes left in regulation. Lauren Sing and Brooke Meyer got assists.
Willmar was outshot 5-1 in the first eight-minute overtime and 6-3 in the second.
“They took us off the puck quite often,” Anderson said. “It was a tough game, a very physical game on their part. We’re more of a finesse, kind of a passing team.”
Willmar skated off a Cougars powerplay in the third minute of the second OT before getting the advantage at the seven-minute mark.
The Cardinals finish 14-11, including a December victory over the Cougars at All-Seasons where Sandberg also had 36 saves.
