Girls Hockey: Hutch halts Cards’ season

HUTCHINSON - The Willmar girls hockey team did well with the chances it had Saturday against top-seed Hutchinson in a Section 2A semifinals game.
Trouble was, the Tigers defense just never let the Cardinals create enough of those opportunities, allowing Willmar just 14 shots on goal in a 5-3 victory.
The Tigers (15-10-1) move on to play Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato, a 3-2 overtime winner over Mankato East/Loyola in Saturday’s other semfinals game.
The title game is 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Gustavus in St. Peter. Willmar finished the season 12-13-2.
Hutchinson’s Addie Roling scored a first-period goal and Alex Hantge scored midway through the second period to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead.
Willmar cut the Tigers’ lead to one goal three times but couldn’t fire in the tying goal.
Shelby Schneider, Jordan Sankey and Anne Johnston scored the Cardinals’ goals and Hannah Kobienia, Riley Schneider and Brooke Oveson had assists.
Willmar goalie Johnika Wodash turned back 27 Hutchinson shots.
