Girls Hockey: Late goal lifts Tech past Willmar, 2-1

ST. CLOUD -- The Willmar girls hockey team still searches for their first win of the season after falling to Central Lakes Conference rival St. Cloud Tech 2-1 Monday.

ST. CLOUD -- The Willmar girls hockey team still searches for their first win of the season after falling to Central Lakes Conference rival St. Cloud Tech 2-1 Monday.

The Tigers took a 1-0 lead just after the two-minute mark on a Michelle Moran goal, then the Cardinals (0-2, 0-2) answered with Meckenzie Dahle's score just before six minutes had elapsed.

A defensive battle ensued through the second period and into the third before Katie Haus scored the go-ahead goal with 3:49 left.

The Cardinals' scoring chances and shots on goal dropped with each passing frame. Willmar had 11 shots on goal in the first, then six and four in the last two periods.

Freshman goalie Bailey Young had 31 saves overall for the Cardinals, including 13 in the first.

"Bailey played very well to keep us in the game," said Willmar coach Rick Dahle. "We had a chance to win, but we just couldn't pull it out."

The Cardinals host Marshall in a non-conference game tonight at 7 p.m. in their home opener at the Civic Center.
