LITCHFIELD -- The Willmar Cardinals scored three times in the game's final 4½-minutes to break open a tight game and beat the Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato Dragons 4-0 in girls hockey on Tuesday.
It was 1-0 when Annie Johnston ignited the late assault with a goal at 12:38. That was followed by markers from Shelby Schneider and Becca Freese, who gave Willmar (12-6-2) its first lead at 13:23 of the second. Brooke Mayer had two helpers and Schneider one.
Willmar goalie Maddie Sandberg had some big saves in the first two periods before the Cardinals' offense revved up. She finished with 27 saves and the shutout. LDC keeper Dani Elam stopped 34 of 38.
