WILLMAR - A pair of eighth-graders scored for St. Cloud Apollo, and the Eagles edged the Willmar Cardinals 2-1 on Tuesday at Kennedy Elementary.
At 70 minutes, Apollo midfielder Jessica Timpane lobbed a shot from outside the 18 yard box over Willmar goalie Laura Christianson’s head for the eventual game-winner.
The Cardinals fell to 4-8-1 overall, and are winless in Central Lakes Conference play at 0-7-1.
“We came out very aggressive,” Willmar head coach Chelsea Brown said. “We knew we had to be first to the ball, but we struggled in connecting our passes tonight and generating that offense.”
Cardinals’ junior midfielder Hannah Schirm put Willmar on the board at 50 minutes, taking an assist from Ingrid Lindgren and a bounce off an Apollo defender to put it into the back of the net.
Apollo’s Ashley Koepp also scored, at 35 minutes unassisted.
Willmar next plays Monday at home against Alexandria.
