ALEXANDRIA - Laura Christenson made 14 saves for Willmar as Alexandria outshot the visiting Cardinals 17-7, but the teams played to a 1-1 overtime draw Thursday in a Central Lakes Conference match.

Alexandria seemed just moments from sending Willmar home with a loss, but Willmar senior Stephanie Thompson made a heads-up play by using her head to make a defensive save just outside the net in the 77th minute.

“Alexandria is a great team,” said Willmar coach Chelsea Brown. “Everything was clicking for us and Laura made some unbelievable saves. We played with poise and showed we can be competitive.”

Willmar got its lone goal from Hannah Schirm in the 21st minute. Haley Burns had scored 13 minutes earlier to give Alexandria a quick 1-0 lead.

Both goals were unassisted.
