WILLMAR - The Willmar girls soccer team missed on several scoring chances and it cost them in the end.
St. Cloud Tech scored its first goal in just 32 seconds and Willmar couldn’t manage a second-half equalizer as the Tigers won their second-straight match, 3-1, on Thursday at the Kennedy School field.
With Tech leading by two, the Cardinals’ Hannah Johnson scored on a penalty kick in the 58th minute, but Tech held off Willmar’s attempts to tie and iced the game with a goal in the 73rd minute.
“We had opportunities to score,” said Willmar co-head coach David Vinje. “We’ve just got to be a little more clinical before the goal, just taking that little extra breath, a little more time.”
Despite getting down early, the Cardinals kept up the attack, finishing with 12 shots on goal compared to Tech’s 11.
The Cardinals pressed to tie after Johnson’s goal and Tech hunkered down defensively.
The Tigers’ Olivia Jacobs goal with just six minutes left in the game iced their victory.
“We definitely competed,” Vinje said. “We just came up on the other side of the scoresheet.”
The Cardinals travel to Becker for a 7 p.m. game on Monday.
