Girls swimming and diving: Cardinals' Brogren advances to Saturday in the 100 breaststroke
Willmar senior places 12th and will swim in the state Class A consolation final in Minneapolis.
MINNEAPOLIS — Willmar senior Ava Brogren will compete in the consolation finals of the 100-yard breaststroke after taking 12th place in prelims Friday afternoon.
It was Day 2 of the Minnesota State High School League Girls Class A Swimming and Diving Championships at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center on the University of Minnesota campus.
Brogren hit the board at 1 minute, 8.31 seconds, beating her seed time by a half-second.
The Cardinals’ 200 freestyle relay quartet of Brogren, sophomore Aubrey Schueler, senior Ana Hernandez and sophomore Shelby Reed missed the consolation finals by .15 seconds. They finished 17th at 1:42.70 while Waconia advanced at 1:42.55.
In the 200 individual medley, Brogren missed out on a spot in the consolation finals after finishing in 19th place at 2:15.85. Benilde-St. Margaret’s Sydney Holinka got the final spot in the consolation finals with a 16th-place time of 2:15.31.
The Class A state championship meet will get underway at noon Saturday back at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center. The consolation race will begin each event, followed by the championship race.
