Girls Swimming Roundup: Willmar Cardinals easily get past Otters

Willmar earns a 97-57 conference victory over Fergus Falls

WILLMAR — After dropping its first two Central Lakes Conference duals, the Willmar girls swimming and diving team got into the win column.

The Cardinals captured a 97-57 victory over Fergus Falls on Tuesday after earning wins in eight of the meet’s 12 events from Willmar High School.

Willmar’s Avery Welsh won a pair of individual events. The senior earned first place in the 50-yard freestyle after swimming the race in 26.97 seconds. She also was victorious in the 100 freestyle with a time of 58.37.

Senior Kiana Gallinger, junior Ava Brogren and freshman Aubrey Schueler also collected wins for the home team.

Gallinger took the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:29.96. Clocking in at 1:09.95, Schueler won the 100 butterfly. Brogren was first to finish the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:04.79.

The Cardinals swept all three relay races.

The team of Brogren, Schueler, senior Allie Evink and freshman Shelby Reed won the 200 medley relay in 2:12.93. Brogren, Schueler, Evink and Welsh took first in the 200 freestyle relay. In the last event of the night, Brogren, Welsh and Evink were joined by freshman Cate Brogren for a victory in the 400 freestyle relay.

Willmar’s next dual is at 6 p.m. Thursday at Sartell.
