Girls Tennis: Litchfield doubles team advances to state semifinals

Kylie Michels and Britney Prahl pick up a pair of wins at the state Class A tournament in Minneapolis. Athletes from Benson/KMS, New London-Spicer and Montevideo all lose.

MINNEAPOLIS — It was a triumphant day for a doubles duo from Litchfield and a memorable one for several other area athletes.

All involved participated in the individual portion of the state Class A girls tennis tournament Thursday at the Reed-Sweatt Tennis Center.

Litchfield’s Kylie Michels and Britney Prahl have advanced to the state semifinals after two victories. The duo beat Katelyn Torrel and Anna Beaudette of Eveleth-Gilbert Area 6-1, 6-2 in the first round, then knocked off Hayden Winjum and Halle Winjum of Crookston 6-2, 6-3 in the quarterfinals.

Michels and Prahl play Breck’s Ellie Pirtle and Petra Lyon on Friday. Breck beat Litchfield to win the state team title Wednesday, 7-0.

Pritle and Lyon opened play Thursday with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over New London-Spicer’s Izzy Schmiesing and Delaney Hanson.


Also in doubles, the Benson/Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg team of Hannah Helms and Elise Ducan fell to Belle Plaine’s Courtney Eppen and Josie Schmidt, 6-1, 6-4.

In singles, Litchfield’s Ryanna Steinhaus went 1-1. She opened with a 6-2, 0-6, 6-4 victory over Wadena-Deer Creek’s Madison Packer. Steinahus then lost to Isabelle Elness of Minnehaha Academy 6-0, 6-0.

Also in singles, Montevideo’s Emily Brace lost in the opening round to Lydia Delich of Eveleth-Gilbert Area, 6-1, 6-3.

Individual tournament play commences at 8 a.m. Friday and concludes with state championship and third-place matches at about 11:30 a.m. at the Reed-Sweatt Tennis Center.
