Girls tennis: Litchfield, New London-Spicer doubles teams end well

The Dragons' Kylie Michels and Britney Prahl finish third in the state Class A tournament while the Wildcats' Izzy Schmiesing and Delaney Hanson take fifth place.

MINNEAPOLIS — Litchfield and New London-Spicer had doubles teams bring home medals Friday at the state Class A girls tennis tournament.

Litchfield’s doubles team of Kylie Michels and Britney Prahl finished third. New London-Spicer’s Izzy Schmiesing and Delaney Hanson won the consolation championship.

Michels and Prahl opened the day at the Reed-Sweatt Tennis Center with a 6-0, 7-5 loss to Breck’s Ellie Pirtle and Petra Lyon in the championship semifinals. Pirtle and Lyon went on to win the state doubles title.

Michels and Prahl then beat Aditi Nadkami and Witt Mehbod of Breck 6-1, 6-0 to capture the third-place match.

Schmiesing and Hanson won two matches Friday, beating Fairmont’s Libby Totzke and Maggy Totzke 6-4, 6-4 in the consolation semifinals, then knocking off Rochester Lourdes’ Caroline Daley and Erin Witter 6-3, 7-5 in the consolation final.


“Both girls had a great experience and played their best tennis over the two days,” NLS head coach Chad Schmiesing said. “Coach Beth (Pederson) and myself are both so proud of the mental toughness they showed and the energy they brought to the court.”

Schmiesing and Stahl also beat Pipestone’s Emma Stahl and Toryn Woelber 6-2, 6-1 in consolation play Thursday.

The Class A singles champion is Ancele Dolensek of Minnehaha Academy. Dolensek beat Minnehaha Academy teammate Isabelle Elness 6-0, 3-6, 7-6 in the final.
