Girls Tennis Roundup: Becker ends Willmar's season

The top-seeded Bulldogs beat the Cardinals 6-1 in the South Sub-Section 8AA semifinals Thursday

BECKER — The Willmar girls tennis team saw its season end in the South Sub-Section 8AA semifinals Thursday.

The fourth-seeded Cardinals lost to top-seeded Becker, 6-1.

Willmar’s lone victory came at No. 4 singles. Allison Bruhn beat Becker’s Julia Peterson 6-2, 6-3.

All of the Bulldogs’ victories were in straight sets. Willmar’s closest match after Bruhn’s came at No. 3 singles. Kessa Mara lost to Becker’s Ayla Brown 6-3, 6-4.

Becker is now host to the South Sub-Section championship match at 4 p.m. Tuesday. The Bulldogs play second-seeded St. Cloud Tech. Tech beat third-seeded Foley. In North Sub-Section 8AA, No. 1 Brainerd beat No. 2 4 Moorhead 7-0 and No. 2 Bemidji defeated No. 3 Alexandria 5-2. Bemidji plays at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Brainerd.


The overall Section 8AA championship is set for 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, at Sartell.

The top-seeded Litchfield Dragons advanced in Section 2A by beating fifth-seeded Holy Family Catholic at Litchfield.

The Dragons next compete at 4 p.m. Tuesday in Litchfield.

Only one match went to three set: No. 3 doubles. Taylor Draeger and Sydney Jackman beat Holy Family Catholic’s Jaiden Lindemann and Callie Lizak 6-0, 4-6, 6-1.

Avery Stilwell won at No. 1 singles, beating Ally Agerland 7-6, 6-3. At No. 3 singles, Karlee Prahl knocked off Emma Murphy 7-6, 6-1..

Minnewaska 6,

Second-seeded Minnewaska advanced to the Section 6A championship by beating No. 3 Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta/West Central Area at Glenwood.


MACA/WCA’s lone victory came at No. 3 doubles, where Kjersten Nibbe and Hope Sperr defeated Minnewaska sophomores Grace Jensen and Olivia Bleick 6-3, 6-3.

Minnewaska’s singles players all won. Addy Randt’s second singles victory was the most difficult. She beat Katelyn Wehking 6-4, 2-6, 10-8.

Minnewaska plays at 4 p.m. Tuesday at top-seeded Osakis for the section championship.
