WILLMAR - The Willmar girls tennis team was all business on Thursday, winning six of its matches in straight sets in a 7-0 conference win over Fergus Falls at the Willmar High School courts.
The Cardinals improved to 5-1 in the Central Lakes Conference and they are 9-1 overall.
“I was proud of how well all the girls played as team today, sweeping all seven matches,” said Willmar head coach Jim Anderson. “The singles girls kept up their part of the bargain, over powering an inexperienced Fergus line up.”
Cayle Hovland at 1-singles and Jordyn Swoboda at 2-singles both won their matches 6-0, 6-0.
Elise Bierbaum surrendered just five games at 3-singles and Lydia Morrell dropped just one game in her 4-singles win.
Anderson dabbled with his attack in doubles but all three new teams came away with solid victories, including Avery Hovland and Amanda Zuidema, who rebounded after losing the first set.
Bergen Vollen and Olivia Corneil at 1-doubles and Erika Boehme and Karina Rice at 2-doubles won by identical 6-3, 7-5 scores.
“Bergen and Olivia connected and played strong at the net, winning in straight sets,” Anderson said. “Karina and Erika out-fought their opponents, coming back in the second set of a close match.”
The Cardinals play host to Marshall on Monday.
