Girls Tennis Roundup: Cardinals clip Sartell

SARTELL -- A sweep in singles gave Willmar its seventh straight win as the Cardinals edged Sartell 4-3 in a Central Lakes Conference dual on Tuesday.

SARTELL - A sweep in singles gave Willmar its seventh straight win as the Cardinals edged Sartell 4-3 in a Central Lakes Conference dual on Tuesday.

Cayle Hovland at No. 1, Elise Bierbaum at No. 3 and Lydia Morrell at No. 4 all won in straight sets for Willmar. Jordyn Swoboda at No. 2 battled back from a 4-1 deficit in the second set to win 6-4 before “dominating” the third set 6-2.

“Jordyn’s match set the tone,” said Willmar coach Jim Anderson.

Willmar’s three doubles teams all lost in straight sets, but Bergen Vollan and Olivia Corneil at No. 1, and Avery Hovland and Amanda Zuidema at No. 3 forced tiebreakers in the second set.

The Cardinals improved to 6-1 in the conference and 11-1 overall. They have nine points in the CLC standings, one behind front-runner and unbeaten St. Cloud Tech.
