Girls tennis roundup: Cards win rain- shortened match

COLD SPRING -- Willmar posted four wins against Central Lakes Conference rival Rocori on Tuesday before rain and lightning shortened the match, which the Cardinals won 4-1.

COLD SPRING - Willmar posted four wins against Central Lakes Conference rival Rocori on Tuesday before rain and lightning shortened the match, which the Cardinals won 4-1.
Jordyn Swoboda at No. 2, Elise Bierbaum at No. 3 and Lydia Morrell at No. 4 doiminated singles for Willmar, with all three winning in straight sets. Bierbaum, a seventh grader, didn’t lose a game, and Morrell, a freshman, won 6-1, 6-0.
“Swoboda dominated her opponent with strong serving and deep penetrating ground strokes from the baseline,” said Willmar coach Jim Anderson. “Bierbaum outfoxed a steady player with a variety of shots and outgunning her for a sound victory.
“Morrell picked up her third straight win at 4-singles with very consistent ball control.”
Erica Ellingson and Olivia Corneil earned the Cardinals’ fourth win with a 6-0, 6-2 win at 2-doubles.
Cayle Hovland at 1-singles, and Avery Hovland and Erica Boehme at 3-doubles split their first two sets for Willmar before the weather cut short their matches.
The Cardinals (1-0, 3-0) host Alexandria for another CLC match on Thursday.

Morgan Reidinger and Nikki Erickson picked up Montevideo’s lone point against a strong Osakis team on Tuesday in Osakis.
Reidinger and Erickson defeated Emma Kulver and Alayna Eldred 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 at 2-doubles.
The Thunder Hawks’ Kailey Maroney almost pulled out a victory at 1-singles, winning the first set against the Silverstreaks’ Ashley Kramer, then dropping the second set in a 7-5 tiebreaker.
Montevideo is 2-2 overall and plays host to Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
