SARTELL - Montevideo avenged an earlier loss to Benson, MACCRAY toppled Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd for a second time this season and top seeds Osakis and Minnewaska posted shutouts in the opening round of the Section 6A team playoffs on Monday at Fitness Evolution.

The tournament wraps up on Wednesday - back at Fitness Evolution - with No. 1 Osakis and No. 5 Montevideo meeting in the first semifinal at 8 a.m. No. 2 Minnewaska and No. 3 MACCRAY follow at 9:30 a.m., and the championship is scheduled for noon.

Minnewaska is the defending section champion.

The individual tournament is Oct. 19-20 at Fitness Evolution.

Montevideo 4, Benson 3

The 1-doubles tandem of Morgan Reidinger and Nikki Erickson gave Montevideo its fourth point with a 6-2 6-4 win.

That was the lone doubles win for the Thunder Hawks as their singles lineup posted three straight-set wins, Kailey Maroney at No. 1, Kendra Wanke at No. 2 and Rachel West at No. 4.

Benson’s wins came from Anne Dieter at 3-singles and the doubles combinations of Gracie Grussing/Olivia Vergin at No. 2 and Grace Ricard/Olivia Hoffman at No. 3.

All seven matches were decided in straight sets with MACCRAY sweeping doubles and taking two of the four singles matches.

Ashtyn Oie posted a shutout at 4-singles for Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd, while MACCRAY’s 1-doubles team of Anne Sandry and Alicia Ervin lost just one game.

The Wolverines also beat LQPV/Dawson-Boyd 4-3 on Sept. 15 in Clara City.

Danielle Thorfinnson didn’t lose a game at 3-singles and Aiden Riley bounced back after losing the first set at 4-singles to win 6-0 6-0 for the Lakers.

Six of Minnewaska’s wins came in straight sets, including Myranda Thoen’s 6-1 6-1 showing at 2-singles.

It was the fourth shutout on the season for the Lakers.
