Girls Tennis Roundup: Melrose edges Waska to win WCC title

MELROSE -- Visiting Minnewaska and Melrose split singles, but the Dutchmen won two of the three doubles matches to edge the Lakers 4-3 and win the West Central Conference title on Tuesday.

MELROSE - Visiting Minnewaska and Melrose split singles, but the Dutchmen won two of the three doubles matches to edge the Lakers 4-3 and win the West Central Conference title on Tuesday.

Both teams were unbeaten heading into the match. Melrose finishes WCC play 8-0 and are now 17-0 overall. The Lakers fell to 15-3 and finished with a WCC record of 7-1.

Mady Brinkman and Becky Klaphake at No. 1, and Jessica Kerfeld and Haiden Rausch at No. 2 won three-setters for Melrose. In singles action, Haley Hoppe at No. 3 and Katie Schulzetenburg at No. 4 won in straight sets for Melrose.

Minnewaska’s wins came from Joelle Thorfinnson at 1-singles, Myranda Thoen at 2-singles and the 3-doubles duo of Karissa LaMont and Greta Reichmann.

Montevideo collected a road win in its last regular-season match on Tuesday in Morris.

The Thunder Hawks swept doubles in straight sets with Morgan Reidinger and Nikki Erickson at No. 1, Mayson Peters and Anna VanRavenswaay at No. 2, and Olivia Bartz and Kiana Anderson at No. 3. Kailey Maroney also won in straight sets for Montevideo at 1-singles.

Montevideo hosts the West Central Conference tournament on Saturday. Play begins at 9 a.m.

Benson 6, YME 1

Benson won three singles matches and swept doubles for the West Central Conference win over Yellow Medicine East on Tuesday in Granite Falls.

Kelsey Rajewsky, Katie Samuelson and Anne Dieter picked up singles victories.

Benson’s doubles teams of Olivia Vergin and Gracie Grussing, Rose McDonald and Cassie Fugleberg and Grace Ricard and Chelsea Hoernamen also were winners.

Anne Clarke won YME’s point at 2-singles.

The Braves are 5-3 in the WCC and 14-5 overall. They play host to Milbank (S.D.) at 3 p.m. Thursday.

Litchfield split a pair of conference matches on Tuesday in New Prague.

The Dragons beat Annandale 5-2 but lost to New Prague 4-3.

Litchfield’s Shanna Kinny won two matches at 1-singles, as did Laney Huhner at 3-singles.

Vaida Behnke and Avery Stillwell also won two matches at 2-doubles.

The Dragons participate in the Wright County Conference tournament beginning at 10 a.m. Thursday in Orono.
