Girls Tennis Roundup: Willmar bounces Apollo/Cathedral

ST. CLOUD -- Willmar dominated singles and posted two straight-set wins in doubles to upend St. Cloud Apollo/Cathedral 6-1 on Tuesday in a Central Lakes Conference dual.

ST. CLOUD - Willmar dominated singles and posted two straight-set wins in doubles to upend St. Cloud Apollo/Cathedral 6-1 on Tuesday in a Central Lakes Conference dual.

Cayle Hovland didn’t lose a game at 1-singles, while  Jordyn Swoboda at No. 2, Elise Bierbaum at No. 3 and Lydia Morrell at No. 4 won a set without losing a game.

The Cardinals’ doubles points came from Erica Ellingson/Olivia Corneil at No. 2 and Amanda Zuidema/Avery Hovland at No. 3.

Willmar (4-1, 8-1) hosts Fergus Falls on Thursday.

Montevideo won two of the three matches that went to three sets, but Minnewaska posted three straight-set wins en route to collecting a conference win at home on Tuesday.

Myranda Thoen at No. 2, Danielle Thorfinnson at No. 3 and Raelynn Wildman at No. 4 all won in straight sets and combined to lose just nine games. The Lakers’ doubles win came at No. 3 when Aiden Riley and Greta Reichmann won 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-3).

Montevideo’s wins came from Kailey Maroney at 1-singles and the 1- and 2-doubles teams of Mary Peters/Anna VanRavenswaay and Nikki Erickson/Morgan Reidinger.

Minnewaska (11-2) hosts Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd and Montevideo hosts Melrose on Thursday.

MACCRAY split singles with visiting Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd, but the Wolverines earned the win after taking two of the three doubles matches on Tuesday.

No. 1 Amber Wieberdink and No. 2  Kim Trulock in singles, and the doubles tandems of No. 1 Alicia Ervin/Annie Sandry and No. 2 Heather Marcus/Brianna Harguth posted wins for MACCRAY.

LQPV/DB’s wins came in straight sets; Courtney Hanson at 3-singles, Ashtyn Oie at 4-singles and Rachel Halvorson/Jessica Sigdahl at 3-doubles.

On Thursday MACCRAY is at Morris/Chokio-Alberta and LQPV/DB is at Minnewaska.

Morris/Chokio-Alberta won the first two singles matches but the Braves’ Katie Samuelson and Anne Dieter won singles matches and Benson took two of three doubles matches for the victory on Tuesday at the Benson High School courts.

Katie Cannon at 1-singles and Victoria Tiernan at 2-singles picked up two of the Tigers’ three points.

The Braves improved to 2-3 in the West Central Conference and 10-5 overall. They are off until playing host to Montevideo at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Shanna Kinny at 1-singles and Laney Huhner at 3-singles won in straight sets for the Dragons, and Natalie Nelson came back from a first-set loss to win at 2-singles on Tuesday in Litchfield.

Litchfield also got wins from the 2-doubles team of Avery Stillwell and Vaida Behnke and 3-doubles team of Morgan Randt and Neriah Lara.
