WILLMAR -- Brent Gloege, the Madison native who lives in West Fargo, N.D., returned to his customary top step at the Rice Tennis Classic on Saturday.

Gloege, the runner-up a year ago at the Senior High courts, outhit upstart Connor Illies 6-3, 6-4 for the men's open singles championship. Gloege has been the dominant force in this tournament for most of the new century, though college coach Scott Larsen of Sartell took him out in three sets in last year's finale. Illies played on the Gustavus Adolphus varsity tennis team this spring as a freshman.

Gloege later paired with Schmiesing to win men's open doubles in a battle with Tom and Reggie Ronning of Alexandria.

In women's open singles, Megan Seipel, who plays tennis for the College of St. Benedict, beat Delany Edwards of Rochester 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) for the title. Seipel paired with last year's singles champion Angie Wiegmann to win the women's open doubles.

Rain delayed the start of Saturday's play by 2½ hours; after that players only had to deal with temperatures around 90 degrees and extreme humidity on Sunday.
