BECKER - Makayla Snow was not happy with her back nine.

Hoping to finish her round strong and keep the BOLD girls' golf team at the front of the Class A pack at the state championship meet Wednesday, she shot bogey or worse on holes 10-through-17.

"I had no clue how close we were," Snow said. "I didn't have any pars on the back nine until the last hole."

It turns out, that final hole was the difference in putting BOLD back on top of the podium.

Finishing the day with a round of 359, the Warriors won their second state title in three years with a two-day total of 704, one stroke better than second-place Park Christian.

"First of all, I thought it was us and Lac qui Parle and started thinking about how close I thought it was. And then I realized it wasn't with them," said Warriors junior Ashley Trongard. "I heard it was within one stroke and I got really nervous."

Trongard added, "It's unbelievable. It's been our goal this whole season."

Up eight strokes after Day 1, BOLD still knew there was work to be done. They didn't want to falter like last spring when they lead after Day 1, only to slip to second place behind Lac qui Parle Valley.

"We had probably the worst round of our life on the back nine last year," said BOLD head coach Dave Altmann. "We learned from that and this year and our scoring averages were better. I said, 'OK girls, we just have to play our game and shoot our average. We don't have to go low, we just have to play good golf.'"

But, it was a tough day on the course. Six of the eight teams shot worse on Day 2. Park Christian was the major exception, dropping 21 strokes from Day 1.

"I had no idea coming into the last hole where we were at," Athmann said.

So as the final scores started rolling in, there was plenty of fear for the Warriors.

"I cried a lot," Snow said with a laugh. "That's all that was going on. I didn't know what to think."

Eventually, those shifted into tears of joy.

"It makes it all really special to know we're the ones on top this time," Snow said. "It feels good to be back on top."

Athmann added, "I wouldn't say we played our best golf. But we played as well as we needed to play."

While LQPV was unable to defend its team title from a year ago, junior Rachel Halvorson secured her second straight individual championship with a two-day total of 160, holding off Fillmore Central's Madison Scheevel by one stroke.

"It was not easy and I had to work for it on every shot," Halvorson said. "It was a tough round today but I fought through it and it came out good in the end."

Between last year's state title and leading after Tuesday, it was a much different title win for Halvorson.

"Last year I didn't have a lead going into the second day and this year I did," she said. "I think it made me too relaxed. The back nine, I started focusing more."

Heading into the final hole, technology helped Halvorson to her final goal.

"This year, they have online scoring so my coaches told me I needed to get a par on the last hole," Halvorson said, "and I ended up getting a birdie."
