Gymnastics: Mottinger, Thompson runners-up at state

MINNEAPOLIS -- Willmar's Haley Mottinger and Stephanie Thompson both placed second in events at the Class A Minnesota State Gymnastics Meet Saturday at the University of Minnesota's Sports Pavilion.

MINNEAPOLIS -- Willmar's Haley Mottinger and Stephanie Thompson both placed second in events at the Class A Minnesota State Gymnastics Meet Saturday at the University of Minnesota's Sports Pavilion.

Mottinger, a junior, scored 9.625 in the vault, placing behind Alexandria's Hannah Wendel's 9.875. Mottinger placed fourth in the event in the 2014 state meet.

Thompson, a senior, scored 9.625 on the beam to place second behind Melrose's Mady Brinkman, a sophomore, who won with a 9.650. Thompson was 14th in the event in last year's state meet.

Wendel also won the floor exercise with a 9.60. New London-Spicer sophomore Courtney Henjum tied for seventh with a 9.475, Mottinger was ninth at 9.450 and Thompson was 10th at 9.425. She was sixth in the event in the 2014 state meet.

Austin's Jennifer Boyle won the bars with a 9.575 and Mottinger was 15th at 8.750. NLS junior Mya Rohman was 26th at 8.350.

Detroit Lakes sophomore Molly Lyngaas placed first all-around by the narrowest of margins over Brinkman. Lyngaas finished at 38.025 while Brinkman scored 38.0. Wendel was third at 37.875.

Thompson was 10th all-around at 36.675 and Mottinger was 12th at 36.550. Thompson was 17th at last year's state meet.

Lyngaas' victory made it a Detroit Lakes sweep at the meet. DL won the Class A team championship on Friday with a 150.025. Melrose, the 2014 state champ, finished second at 149.220 and Watertown-Mayer/Mound Westonka was third at 145.725.

Roseville won its fourth-straight Class AA state championship with a 150.050. St. Cloud Tech was second at 148.075 and Lakeville North was third at 147.525.
