Gymnastics: Weiler, Jacobson, Stahl, Bowden all qualify from 6A

NEW LONDON -- Abbey Weiler and Kelsey Jacobson of Willmar, Kelsey Stahl of New London-Spicer and Briquelle Bowden of Paynesville/Eden Valley-Watkins all qualified for the Class A state gymnastics meet after solid performances at the Section 6A meet on Saturday.

Melrose easily won the team title with 145.925 points. Sartell was second with 140.075, New London-Spicer third with 138.575 and Willmar fourth with 137.70.

Weiler, a sophomore, was third in the all-around with a 35.675 and also qualified for state in floor exercise, finishing fourth with a season-best 9.275. She also finished in the top 10 in her other three events, placing fifth on vault (9.175), seventh on balance beam (8.75) and 10th in uneven bars (8.475).

"It's really exciting," said Weiler about earning her first trip to state. "I didn't really think I would make it. I wanted to go in floor because that's my favorite. I changed my dance tumbling because the requirements were worth more points. I think that helped me a lot. But it was a surprise that I also made it in all-around."

The top four individuals in each of the four events and all-around event advance to the state meet Feb. 26-27 at the University of Minnesota's Sports Pavilion in Minneapolis.

Jacobson, a junior, earned her second straight trip to state in vault. She scored a 9.4 to place second behind Stahl, a freshman, who had a 9.425 to win individual honors.

Bowden, also a freshman, was second in floor exercise with a 9.325 and also qualified on bars with a third-place finish of 9.025.

Hailey Brinkman of Melrose won the all-around in 37.225, while Jailyn Brinkman of Melrose was second with 36.65.
