High School Boys Basketball: Willmar Cardinals switch up their defense to down Tech

WILLMAR — Senior guard Jacob Rosendahl, senior forward Chase Dirksen and junior guard Alex Schramm combined for 49 points to lead Willmar to a wire-to-wire win over St. Cloud Tech on Thursday.

The Cardinals captured a 67-53 victory during a Central Lakes Conference game from Willmar High School.

Rosendahl paced all players with 23 points on 6-for-12 shooting from the field and 8 of 10 from the foul line. He had 13 points in the opening half.

Dirksen had 14 points and seven rebounds, five of which on the offensive glass. One of Dirksen’s offensive rebounds came in the waning seconds of the first half when a putback off a Rosendahl missed layup gave the home team a 35-23 halftime advantage.

Schramm gave the Cardinals an early cushion with his outside shooting. Touching nothing but net on his first two attempts, Schramm drilled his third 3-pointer with 8 minutes, 42 second left in the first half to push Willmar ahead 22-12 and result in a Tech timeout.

High School Basketball: St. Cloud Tech Tigers at Willmar Cardinals

Opening as much as a 17-point lead in the second half, Willmar maintained its advantage thanks to its work on the defensive end. Frequently switching from man-to-man to a 2-3 zone defense, the Cards held the Tigers to 36 percent shooting from the floor. The hosts also won the rebounding battle 36-26.

Junior forward Devin Yeager paced Tech with 11 points, but made 5 of his 16 field-goal attempts.

Willmar next plays at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday at Brainerd.
