PINE CITY — Taking a game on short notice Thursday, Paynesville picked up a 34-16 non-district win over Pine City.
The Bulldogs originally was scheduled to host Holdingford before being canceled due to COVID-19 concerns. Paynesville then scheduled a home game with Kenyon-Wanamingo for Friday before K-W also pulled out due to COVID-19 concerns, forcing the Bulldogs to hit the road for a Thursday game with Pine City.
Paynesville jumped out to a 6-0 first-quarter lead after a touchdown pass from Grayson Fuchs to Grant Ruchti. Drew Tangen added a rushing touchdown in the second to help the Bulldogs build a 14-8 halftime lead.
After a scoreless third, Tangen rushed into the end zone on the first play of what was a 20-point period for Paynesville. On the Dragons’ next possession, the Bulldogs’ Eli Nelson intercepted the ball and scooted 60 yards for a defensive touchdown. Fuchs then used his legs for a 35-yard score to cap off the scoring for Paynesville.
The Bulldogs’ next scheduled game is against Osakis. The teams play at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12, in Alexandria.
