High School Football: Upsala/Swanville downs Benson in another thriller

Patriots score with 8 seconds left to beat Braves 22-15

BENSON — Like the last time these teams played, this one went down to the wire.

Upsala/Swanville Area beat Benson 22-15 in a Section 4A quarterfinal Tuesday night at Brock Field.

Fifth-seeded USA trailed 15-14 with 2:15 to play and the ball on the Patriots’ 10-yard line after a Benson fumble with the Braves threatening to score.

USA then drove 90 yards on 12 plays to score with eight seconds left. Levi Lampert caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from Carter Johnson for the winning score. Johnson then hit Hayden Chuba with a two-point conversion pass to make it 22-15. In the winning drive, USA completed six of nine passes.

Fourth-seeded Benson beat USA 20-18 in overtime on Nov. 6.

Benson led 15-14 at halftime and throughout nearly the entire second half. The Braves’ Thomas Dineen scored on a 29-yard run, then ran in the two-point conversion to make it 8-8 in the first quarter.

With the Braves trailing 14-8, Ben Peterson caught a 43-yard touchdown pass from Cole Hedman. Patrick Minchow’s kick made it 15-14.

USA is scheduled to play top-seeded Mayer Lutheran at 1 p.m. Saturday in the semifinals. In the other 4A semifinal, No. 3 Lester Prairie plays at No. 2 Browerville/Eagle Valley, also at 1 p.m. Saturday. Lester Prairie beat No. 6 Parkers Prairie 22-14 and B/EV beat No. 7 Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa 48-18.

The section final is tentatively scheduled for 11 a.m. Nov. 28 at Sauk Centre.

Seventh-seeded Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa saw its season come to an end after falling to second-seeded Browerville/Eagle Valley in Browerville. The Jaguars finished the season with a 0-7 record.

Minneota 34,
MACCRAY 8

Top-seeded Minneota rushed for 310 yards on 39 carries to beat No. 8 MACCRAY at Minneota.

MACCRAY trailed 34-0 before it scored in the fourth quarter. Payton Kleinhuizen caught an 18-yard touchdown pass from Isaac Strommer. Strommer then found Carter Wrede in the end zone for the two-point conversion.

Strommer completed 22 of 40 passes for 163 yards and an interception. His top target was Brady Kienitz, who caught 11 passes for 107 yards.

Fifth-seeded Lac qui Parle Valley came away with an upset victory over fourth-seeded Lakeview in Cottonwood.

The Eagles avenged a 35-22 road loss to Lakeview on Oct. 16.

LQPV is scheduled to play top-seeded Minneota at 3 p.m. Saturday.

BOLD 59, YME 0

Tim Peppel rushed for 237 yards and four touchdowns on 16 carries to help BOLD last Yellow Medicine East at Olivia.

The second-seeded Warriors rushed for 429 yards to beat seventh-seeded YME.

In the process, BOLD kicker Braeden Tersteeg broke the state record for the most point-after touchdown kicks. He now has 177 PATs. The previous record of 176 was held by Breck’s Brandon Robinson (2001-03).

BOLD is scheduled to play sixth-seeded Canby at 3 p.m. Saturday in the Section 5A semifinals.

The Lancers beat third-seeded Dawson-Boyd 20-12.

Third-seeded Dawson-Boyd dropped to 5-2 this season after falling against No. 6 Canby at Dawson.

Leading wire-to-wire, the Lancers avenged an opening-night 28-7 loss at Dawson-Boyd from Oct. 9.

Melrose 19

Up by two points entering the fourth quarter, third-seeded Minnewaska got a pair of fourth-quarter rushing touchdowns from Max Reichmann and Tyson Meyer to defeat sixth-seeded Melrose in Glenwood.

Meyer scored the game’s opening touchdown on an 8-yard rush in the first quarter. Later, he reached the end zone on a 6-yard run in the third before tacking on a 1-yard plunge to put the Lakers up two scores early in the fourth. The senior running back finished with 172 rushing yards on 31 carries.

Reichmann sealed the victory for Minnewaska with a 23-yard score.

The Lakers are scheduled to play at 2 p.m. Saturday at Pierz. The second-seeded Pioneers defeated St. Cloud Cathedral 28-19.
