DETROIT LAKES — The Willmar football team made the 2020 season end on a high note with a 35-0 victory over Detroit Lakes.

It was a match-up of the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds in Section 8AAAA that was set up after Wednesday night’s executive order ending all interscholastic sports after Friday night because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Top-seeded Rocori played second-seeded Grand Rapids for the 8AAAA title, with the Spartans winning 34-6.

Willmar, the fourth seed, saw Alex Schramm rush for 167 yards and two touchdowns. The junior quarterback also completed six of 10 passes for 129 yards and another TD, a 67-yarder to Eli Jorgenson at 10:24 of the second quarter to open the scoring.

Schramm finished the season with more than 1,000 rushing yards, becoming the sixth Cardinal in school history to break the 1,000-yard mark on the ground according to the team’s record book. Drey Dirksen, the 2018-19 Hengstler-Ranweiler award winner, was the last to do it with 1,261 yards in 2018.

Schramm helped boost the Cardinals’ lead at 4:05 of the second quarter because of a 44-yard quarterback-keeper.

Schramm then scored with 1:15 left in the first half on a 10-yard run that helped make it 21-0.

Michael Price scored on a 1-yard run with 31 seconds left in the third quarter. Helping to seal the win was Brandt Sunder’s 30-yard fumble return with 11:42 remaining.

LaBlue Moo went 5-for-5 on extra-point kicks.

Third-seeded Detroit Lakes finishes 5-2. Willmar ends the year 6-2.
