High School Girls Hockey: Willmar swarms Alexandria in second and third
Bailey Olson nets hat trick for Willmar in 5-1 road win
ALEXANDRIA — After a quiet first period, Bailey Olson and the rest of the Willmar offense got to work.
Olson notched the first goal 15 seconds into the second period. That was the first of three goals for the senior forward as 10th-ranked (Class A) Willmar got a Central Lakes Conference victory over Alexandria at the Runestone Community Center.
“It was a good matchup,” said Willmar head coach Eric Setrum. “Tough first period but we came up strong in the second and third.”
Up 1-0, Willmar’s Madison Garberding tacked on a power-play goal at 6 minutes, 53 seconds of the second. Alexandria responded with a Peyton Boesl goal 14 seconds later before Willmar went into the break up 3-1 following Olson’s second score at 13:02.
Willmar blew the game open within a 42-second span in the third. Nina Dawson tallied a goal at 8:04, and Olson completed the hat trick with an unassisted score at 8:46.
“They did a good job moving the puck around and plugging up the middle,” Setrum said of his team’s offense.
In net, Halle Mortensen came up with 30 saves for Willmar. The win came despite Alexandria having a 31-17 advantage in shots on goal.
Willmar plays Sartell/Sauk Rapids at 7:15 p.m. Friday in Sartell.
