WILLMAR — The Willmar softball team went into Tuesday’s doubleheader against Sauk Rapids with three goals.

First, keep your focus. Second, play with aggressiveness. And third, play a clean game.

The goals came very close to being met.

Willmar beat Sauk Rapids 4-2 and 14-8. It was the Cardinals’ first two wins of the season.

“I don’t think we were 100% clean tonight, but we definitely pulled it together on the focus and aggressiveness,” Willmar head coach Shannon Cayler said. “It’s something we’ve been working on in practice.

“Let’s focus on what's in our control and let’s stay aggressive. We did, so let’s credit them (the players) for that.”

Down 2-0 after the first inning in Game 1, the Cardinals tied the game in the fourth with a two-run single by Makayla Swanson. A sacrifice bunt by Carlie Berskow allowed Lily Reed to score the deciding run in the fifth. Willmar tacked on an insurance run in the sixth after Swanson scored on a passed ball.

Amelia Reed finished 2-for-4 in Game 1. Lily was the winning pitcher after striking out seven in a complete-game effort.

In the nightcap, Bentley Sjoberg was 3-for-4 with three runs, three stolen bases and two RBIs. Lily finished 3-for-5 with two doubles, three RBIs, a run and a stolen base. Amelia and Hallie Smith were both 2-for-5 for the Cardinals, with Smith scoring twice. Lily once again got the win after tossing 3-2/3 innings in relief.

“They came ready tonight,” Cayler said. “And that’s something we’ve been working on the last couple of days in practice, too. I’m glad to see the winning part of it. That was nice.”

Willmar has a home Central Lakes Conference doubleheader with Brainerd starting at 4 p.m. Thursday.
