MONTEVIDEO — Against one of the better teams in the West Central Conference, Montevideo rallied to victory.

Trailing after the third set against Melrose, the Thunder Hawks mounted a comeback to emerge with a five-set triumph on Friday.

Montevideo (2-3) won 25-17, 16-25, 17-25, 25-21, 15-12.

A trio of seniors and a pair of sophomores put up monster numbers in the winning effort. Sophomore setter Tenley Epema produced 51 assists, 10 digs and three ace serves. Her favorite passing target was Avery Koenen. The sophomore middle hitter had a team-best 25 kills to go with 10 digs and Thunder Hawks’ only two ace blocks.

Senior outside hitter Livia Gades had a Montevideo-high four ace serves, eight kills and 28 digs. Fellow senior outside hitter Alexis Blockmoller led the team with 32 digs. Senior middle hitter Megan Anderson chipped in 10 kills and nine digs.

With a couple of Gades’ ace serves and a Koenen attack, Montevideo jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first set before Melrose was forced to call a timeout. Later, as part of a 5-0 run, Epema’s two aces from the service line sandwiched another Koenen kill to give the Thunder Hawks their biggest lead of the set at 23-11.

Shifting the tide of the match, Melrose responded with six of the next seven points, but Brockmoller closed the set with a powerful kill that bounced just inside the backline.

In the second set, Melrose was the team that raced out of the gates. Consecutive ace blocks from junior middle blocker Kimberly Klassen gave the visitors a 9-4 advantage and led to a Montevideo timeout. She added another block to cap a 6-0 surge and give her team a 11-4 cushion.

The Dutchmen led by as much as 17-8 in the second set. The Thunder Hawks cut the deficit to 20-14 after a Koenen kill, but they could not get any closer. Klassen finished the set with an ace block.

Melrose (6-4) won the next set, before Montevideo pulled out the final two sets to seal the win. It is only the Dutchmen’s second defeat to a conference opponent this season.

The Thunder Hawks next play at 3:15 p.m. Saturday at MACCARY.
