High School Volleyball Roundup: MACCRAY finds a match with Benson

Wolverines get past Braves in a match-up of unfamiliar foes, 3-0 Monday in Clara City

CLARA CITY β€” The MACCRAY Wolverines played a non-conference match with the Benson Braves on Monday night.

MACCRAY won 25-16, 25-23, 25-17.

Because of the coronavirus pandemic, the teams were not originally scheduled to play each other. When both had opponents cancel, they decided to compete Monday. MACCRAY was scheduled to play Lac qui Parle Valley. Benson initially had Sauk Centre on its schedule, then was to play Foley before that match also was postponed.

MACCRAY was led by Elsie Sumner’s 10 kills. Sydney Thein contributed 22 set assists. Ella Bourne had 19 digs and three service aces.

For the Braves, Kimberly Pagel had six kills. Ellie Moesenthin had eight set assists and Rachel Berens had 12 digs and four kills.

Benson next plays at 7:15 p.m. Thursday against BOLD at Benson. MACCRAY is scheduled to play at 7:15 p.m. Thursday at Central Minnesota Christian in Prinsburg.

NL-S won 25-14, 25-21, 25-20.

Ashlynn Olson (11 kills) and Aleah Zieske (10 kills) also were in double digits in kills for the Wildcats, who got 25 set assists from Emma Hanson and 17 more from Nyla Johnson.
