WILLMAR — Down 3-0 after a Fergus Falls goal from Isaac Young to start the second period, Willmar could have given up.

Instead, they got fired up and scored three in the second to tie the game. The Cardinals tacked on a goal in the third to take a one-goal lead before the Otters tied the game in the final seconds of regulation. Both teams played to a standstill in overtime as Willmar and Fergus Falls played to a 4-4 Central Lakes Conference tie Thursday at the Willmar Civic Center.

"It was quite a game," said Willmar head coach Jamie Hagen. "It took us awhile but we got [the puck] in the net finally. Once we got a goal it just kind of sparked us. We just needed to shoot the puck. We were trying to be too fancy and just needed to get the shot on net. The second half of that second period we really came on."

A pair of Mike DeBrito goals along with the Young score gave the Otters the 3-0 edge. The Cardinals finally got on the board at the 6-minute, 52-second mark of the second period on a Tanner Bauman goal. Later in the period, Asaiah Smith and Ashton Gregory each netted a goal in a 57-second span to tie the game. Eldridge DeKraai, on a pass from Adam DeJong gave the Cardinals a 4-3 lead at 10:59 in the third. Bauman, Smith and DeKraai each scored their first career varsity goals.

Willmar was seconds away from victory before Young got his second goal of the game with five seconds remaining in the game. Fergus Falls outshot Willmar 6-3 in the extra period, but Gunnar Banks held firm with 33 saves.

"We count on Gunnar to give us a chance to win," Hagen said.
