WILLMAR — Hosting Section 6A foe Northern Lakes in the season opener, the Willmar girls hockey team lit the lamp early and often in a 7-3 victory Tuesday at the Willmar Civic Center.
Bailey Olson finished the game with two goals and two assists, including the first score of the season at the 4-minute, 40-second mark of the opening period.
Mya Monson came up with a pair of goals and an assist, and Madison Garberding had a pair of goals in the victory.
Jaidon Bredesen punched in a power-play goal in the first period.
In net, Bryton Carlson got the win for Willmar, stopping 36 shots. Despite the Cardinals being outshot 39-24, they led in quality scoring chances, 12-7.
“We did a lot of good things,” Willmar head coach Eric Setrum said. “But we’ve got a lot to work on.
“Our Garberding-Olson-Monson line really played well at times. They’re going to be tough to match when they get going.”
Willmar will return to action Saturday on the road against Prairie Centre.
