With a 4-1 victory Friday night in the home finale at the Willmar Civic Center, the WarHawks are now 7-0 against the Steel this season with a 35-12 scoring advantage in their NA3HL junior hockey games.
After a quiet first period, Willmar scored 90 seconds into the second with Dylan Gajewski’s 13th goal of the year. Kaleb Miller followed up with his fourth goal at the 12-minute mark.
New Ulm cut the deficit to one after Ryler Schelle notched a short-handed goal 55 seconds into the third before the WarHawks closed the game out with scores from Nate Cox and Ben Luedtke.
Miller finished the game with a goal, an assist and a plus-2 in plus-minus rating. In goal, Lukas Haugen had 25 saves in the victory.
While they didn’t score in the first, the WarHawks’ offense set the tone right away with a 26-7 edge in shots on goal. The final tally was 57-26 in favor of Willmar.
Willmar will have one more game against the Steel: in the season finale March 28 at New Ulm.
The WarHawks have their final home game with the Alexandria Blizzard at 7:10 p.m. Sunday, March 21. Willmar then wraps up the season with three road games: March 24 at Granite City, March 27 at Alexandria and March 28 at New Ulm.
