HUTCHINSON -- Willmar couldn't overcome a poor hitting performance as the Cardinals fell 25-14, 25-17, 25-16 to state-ranked Hutchinson in a non-conference volleyball match Monday.

The Cardinals committed 33 hitting errors and didn't have anyone reach double figures in total kills. Hannah Smith paced Willmar with seven kills.

"It was disappointing because we have been playing well lately," said Willmar coach Terrin DeBoer. "We passed pretty well, but we didn't hit well or serve well. We didn't play up to our potential."

The Tigers, who are fourth in the latest State Coaches' Association Class AA poll, won their fifth straight match to improve to 9-2. The loss dropped the Cardinals to 7-4.

Jena Thompson had the team's only ace serve and Jennie Mattison and Addy Nelsen had eight set assists apiece for Willmar. Thompson and Alex Lippert had two ace blocks. Karlee Johnson piled up a team-high 13 digs.
