Three man-advantage goals lift Willmar to a 4-3 win over Mason City

WILLMAR — When given the man advantage, the Willmar WarHawks capitalized on Friday night.

The WarHawks tallied three power-play goals in a 4-3 victory over the Mason City Toros in front of 617 fans at the Willmar Civic Center,

Down 1-0 after the first period, Willmar’s first power-play tally tied the game up. Nik Johnson, a forward from Minneapolis, scored on the advantage at the 9-minute, 24-second mark.

The two teams traded goals early in the third, with Chandler Dennis putting in a goal for the WarHawks and Jordan Newpower scoring for Mason City.

In a 30-second span, Braydon Buckingham scored on the power play at 7:10 and 7:40. Buckingham is from Prior Lake. Michael Sweetland, Willmar’s captain, had an assist on each of Buckingham’s goals.

The WarHawks were 3 of 7 on the power play. The Toros committed 13 penalties for 47 minutes.

Goaltender Zack Ortolano made 29 saves in Willmar’s victory. He started the season in Mason City and now is 2-1 with a 2.76 goals-against average in four games with the WarHawks. Former WarHawk Will Kunka was in net for Mason City, stopping 31 shots.

The teams conclude their two-game series at 7:10 p.m. Saturday at the Willmar Civic Center.
