Junior hockey: WarHawks get a big game from Kerchoff

Forward nets a hat trick in Willmar's 4-1 NA3HL victory at Mason City.

MASON CITY, Iowa — The Willmar WarHawks got a hat trick from Collin Kerchoff and strong goaltending from Cooper Olson to beat the Mason City Toros 4-1 on Friday night.

Kerchoff scored the WarHawks’ first, third and fourth goals, his sixth, seventh and eighth goals of the season, in the victory before 689 fans at the Mason City Arena.

Kechoff is a forward from White Lake, Michigan, who is in his first season in Willmar. He also had 13 assists in 19 games this season.

Willmar’s other goal came from Shawn Ohelnschlager Van Coller. It was the second of the season for the forward from Rosemont. He also has three assists in 11 games with the WarHawks.

Cooper, meanwhile, stopped 23 of 24 shots in goal for Willmar. The 20-year-old from Maple Grove is now 4-2-1 in nine games with the Warhawks, posting a 2.60 goals-against average and a .923 save percentage.

The Toros and WarHawks continue their weekend series at 7:10 p.m. Saturday at the Willmar Civic Center Arena.
