Junior Hockey: WarHawks get a much-needed sweep

Willmar records two victories over New Ulm over the weekend to break a seven-game losing streak

WILLMAR — The Willmar Warhawks completed their most successful weekend of the season with a 4-1 victory over the New Ulm Steel on Sunday at the Willmar Civic Center Arena.

It completed a weekend sweep of the Steel and ended a seven-game losing streak for Willmar’s entrant in the NA3HL.

Sunday’s victory included goals from Benson, Michael Sweetland, Ryne Mohrman and Louis Anders.

New Ulm spoiled the shutout for goaltender Luke Weberg at 15:50 of the third period when Nate Looft scored. Weberg made 18 saves.

On Saturday at the New Ulm Civic Center,Mohrman scored at 2:48 of overtime to give the WarHawks the 4-3 victory. Louis Anders and Ethan Light had assists for Willmar. It was the second goal of the game for Mohrman, a defenseman from Mounds View.

Willmar scored third-period goals by Mohrman and Owen Thomas to help the WarHawks take a 3-2 lead. New Ulm pulled its goalie and scored with 20 seconds left in regulation. Tommy Michelsen got the goal at 19:40.

Willmar’s next game is against the Alexandria Blizzard at 7:10 p.m. Saturday at the Willmar Civic Center Arena.
