Junior hockey: WarHawks make it eight straight

Willmar beats Mason City 4-0 to keep its winning streak alive

WILLMAR — The hot play the Willmar WarHawks showed at the end of 2021 has carried over into 2022.

In the first game of the new year, Willmar got its eighth straight victory in a 4-0 NA3HL win over the Mason City Toros on Friday at the Willmar Civic Center.

It was also the WarHawks’ fourth straight win by shutout. In net, Will Kunka made 31 saves. It is the fourth straight shutout victory for the Moorhead native, who has not given up a goal since Nov. 20 against Alexandria, saving 106 consecutive pucks.

It didn’t take long for Willmar’s offense to find its footing as Patrick Wyers scored his 12th goal of the season at 1 minute, 10 seconds.

Then in the second period, Tate Hammitt, a defenseman from Bemidji, scored his first goal of the season with a power-play tally at 1:26. He also had a hand in both of the WarHawks’ third period goals, which came from Jeremiah Konkel and Brady O’Brien.
