Junior Hockey: WarHawks win another against New Ulm

Willmar beats Steel 5-2 on Saturday

NEW ULM — The Willmar WarHawks continued its winning ways against the New Ulm Steel.

Willmar is now 3-1 against New Ulm this season after collecting a 5-2 victory in front of 221 fans Saturday at the New Ulm Civic Center.

Three WarHawks — Denys Honcharenko, Christian Kankelfritz and Sam Holm — scored their first goals of the season. Honcharenko is from Ukraine, Kankelfritz is from Fargo, North Dakota, and Holm is from St. Paul.

Tied 2-2 through two periods, Willmar closed the game out with three unanswered goals. The first came from Luke McCarthy at 3 minutes, 23 seconds. Kankelfritz added his goal at 11:23, and Holm closed it out at 16:11.

Goaltender Zack Ortolano made 31 saves for the WarHawks. Ortolano is from Las Vegas.

The WarHawks have three games this week: 7:10 p.m. Tuesday at Alexandria; 7:10 p.m. Friday at home against Mason City; and 7:10 p.m. Saturday at home against Mason City.
