KERKHOVEN -- A young Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg wrestler who suffered a head injury during practice on Monday is doing well after undergoing surgery at the Hennepin County Medical Center.
The family of ninth-grader Fred Mansfield reports today that he is still experiencing some pain, but is alert and communicating with family members. Doctors believe that the surgery conducted on Tuesday to repair a skull fracture went well, according to a Caring Bridge site. Doctors told the family that the brunt of the injury was to the skull and not the brain.
Mansfield suffered the skull fracture after colliding with another student during wrestling practice on Monday afternoon, according to a report in The Guillotine.com.
Mansfield was transported by ambulance after the accident to Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar and airlifted to the Hennepin County Medical Center. He is a patient in HCMC's pediatric intensive care unit and not currently allowed visitors.
He is the son of Howard and Pam Mansfield of rural Kerkhoven.
