WILLMAR — In what looked to be a close American Legion baseball game resulted in a 8-1 victory for Willmar Post 167 over Mankato American on Tuesday at Baker Field.

Willmar found its offense following an RBI hit by Cayden Hanson in the second inning and continued by scoring a run in the third and six in the fourth. Post 167 cracked 11 hits in the game; Mankato connected for three.

“The kids really came into today’s game prepared and really played well,” Post 167 coach Doug Ruter said.

Ian Koosman nearly had a complete game on the mound, pitching 6⅓ innings, giving up three hits, one run and walking two. He ended with nine strikeouts.

Koosman was one of the four batters to also have a multi-hit game, going 2 of 4 with a run and three RBI. Sam Etterman was 2 of 3. Alex Schramm and Jett Salonek both were 2 of 4.

“Koosman really pitched well and we really played good defense behind him and we got some timely hits,” Ruter said. “It led to a really nice win.”

After Mankato scored its lone run in the top of the fourth with Willmar holding a 2-1 lead, Post 167 began to connect at the plate, scoring six straight runs.

“They just really did a good job of putting the ball in play,” Ruter said regarding the high-scoring inning. “They just continued to have great quality at-bats.”

With the regular season coming to a close this week, Ruter is confident in his players and their chances heading into sub-state in Delano.

“We have a good chance, I feel, that we can make a run at sub-state and make it into the state tournament,” he said. “But, you never know. And that’s why you play the game.”

Post 167 closes its regular season at 7 p.m. Friday at New Ulm.
