Legion Baseball Roundup: Morris' Grove outduels Glenwood’s VerSteeg

MORRIS -- A string of singles and an error led to a three-run inning that made the difference in the Morris Legion's 3-2 win over Glenwood in a Division II, District 7 North playoff game Thursday night at Chizek Field.

MORRIS - A string of singles and an error led to a three-run inning that made the difference in the Morris Legion’s 3-2 win over Glenwood in a Division II, District 7 North playoff game Thursday night at Chizek Field.

Morris, the No. 2 seed, plays No. 4 Wheaton at 11 a.m. Saturday in Osakis with a spot in the District 7 final four on the line.

Glenwood, the No. 3 seed, plays a losers’ bracket game against Brandon-Evansville at 1 p.m. Saturday in Osakis.

Behind strong pitching from Glenwood’s Austin VerSteeg and Morris’ Noah Grove, the teams were scoreless through the first 3-1/2 innings.

But in the bottom of the fourth, Grove led off with a walk, and later scored when Brady Jergenson, Toby Sayles and Riley Dietz hit three straight singles.

Grove scored on Sayles’ single, Jergenson came around on Dietz’ hit, and a Glenwood error allowed Sayles to move to third. He scored the third run of the inning on Joey DuFault’s single.

Glenwood’s Jon Nygaard and Justin Amundson drove in runs in the fifth and sixth innings, but Grove pitched a scoreless seventh to seal up the victory.

VerSteeg allowed the three runs on six hits while striking out 14.

Grove allowed one earned run on five hits and struck out 10. Both pitchers issued just one walk.

Wheaton 7, NL-Spicer 6

Two Wheaton singles, two errors and a wild pitch spelled doom for the New London-Spicer Legion team on Friday.

Wheaton scored the tying and go-ahead runs in the top of the seventh, and reliever Eric Schagel stranded NLS runners at second and third, getting a fly out and a strikeout to end the Division II, District 7 North semifinals game at Green Lake Diamonds in Spicer.

NLS, the No. 1 seed, plays No. 6 Kerkhoven in a losers’ bracket game at 3 p.m. Saturday in Osakis.

No. 4 Wheaton plays No. Morris for a spot in the District 7 Final Four at 11 a.m. Saturday in Osakis.

It appeared NLS would run away with the game early, scoring five runs in the first two innings. But Wheaton reliever Blake Coffman worked a solid five innings, allowing just a run on two hits until Schagel relieved in the seventh.

NLS’ Josh Soine was 2-for-4 with a double and he scored a run, Wyatt White drove in two runs and scored, Ike Goetzman was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, and Will Roguske was 1-for-3 and drove in a run. Jaden Hanson was 2-for-4.

NLS starter Michael Arnold allowed just two earned runs and struck out 10.

Kerkhoven 12, Hancock 2

An eight-run fourth inning allowed Kerkhoven to keep its season alive as they drubbed visiting Hancock in five innings in an elimination game of the Division II, District 7 North playoffs on Thursday.

No. 6-seed Kerkhoven (8-8) now plays top-seeded New London-Spicer on Saturday at 3 p.m. in Osakis for another elimination game. NLS was beaten 7-6 by No. 4 Wheaton on Thursday in Spicer.

Kerkhoven batted 13 in the fourth with brothers Nathan and Ryan Torkelson getting two hits apiece in the frame. Both of their second at bats were RBI singles. Nathan finished 3-for-3 with a couple of RBIs and Ryan was 2-for-3.

Rylan Hatlestad struck out five, gave up three hits and walked just one in a complete-game outing to pick up the win.

Also getting two hits for Kerkhoven was Jordan Engler, Brandin Dahl and Wyatt Jones. Engler tripled and scored twice, Dahl doubled and knocked in two runs and Jones had three RBIs.

BOLD 7, Cottonwood 5

Ben Steffel, Austin Weis and Riley Kramer all drove in runs as BOLD rallied from a two-run deficit with a four-run sixth inning to win a Division II, District 7 South playoff game over No. 2-seed Cottonwood on Thursday.

Steffel also was superb in relief, allowing just three hits over four innings while striking out seven to earn the victory.

BOLD, the No. 3 seed, plays top-seed Madison at 11 a.m. in the winners’ bracket final on Saturday in Montevideo.

Weis was 3-for-5, drove in two runs and scored twice and Kramer had two hits and drove in a pair of runs.

Steffel was 2-for-4 and scored twice, Trevor Nissen tripled in a run and scored a run, and Trent Athmann and Logan Nissen both had two hits as BOLD ripped 14 hits off two Cottonwood pitchers.

Carter Asche doubled three times and drove in five runs as Sacred Heart/MACCRAY eliminated Minneota from the Division II, District 7 South playoffs on Thursday in Minneota.

The game was tied 1-1 when SH/MACCRAY opened things up with four runs in the third and another four in the fourth.

Connor Cronen was 2-for-3 and drove in three runs, and Hayden Johnson was 2-for-4 and drove in two. Jack Dykema also had two hits.

Hayden Johnson worked all five innings, allowing a run on four hits and striking out four.

SH/MACCRAY, the No. 9 seed, plays No. 2 Cottonwood in a losers’ bracket game on Saturday in Montevideo at 1 p.m. BOLD defeated Cottonwood 7-5 on Thursday.

Madison 4, GFW 3

Garrett Olson worked a complete game and Daniel Baldwin drove in two runs as the Madison Legion team advanced to the Division II, District 7 South final on Thursday in Madison.

Madison, the No. 1 seed, plays No. 3 BOLD at 11 a.m. Saturday in Montevideo. The winner earns a spot in the District 7 Final Four.

Madison scored twice in the second inning and Olson held onto the shutout until Gibbon-Fairfax-Withrop tied the game in the fifth.

Madison regained the lead with two more runs in the sixth, and Olson limited GFW to a run in the seventh to locked down the win.

Baldwin was 1-for-1 and walked twice, drove in the pair and also scored a run.

Dylan Lillejord tripled, doubled and scored a run.
