Legion Baseball Roundup: Quick start propels Madison past Scarlets

MADISON -- A five-run first inning was more than enough for Madison as Post 158 open their season Thursday by upending visiting Sacred Heart/MACCRAY 9-2.

MADISON - A five-run first inning was more than enough for Madison as Post 158 open their season Thursday by upending visiting Sacred Heart/MACCRAY 9-2.

The Scarlets struck first in the top half of the first when Carter Asche hit a two-run single, but Madison sent up 10 batters to the plate in the bottom half to take control. Highlighting the home half of the inning was Garrett Olson’s bases-clearing double and Austin Domeier’s two-run single.

Olson helped his own cause with the three-hit as he picked up the victory on the mound. Olson worked the first five innings and gave up four hits while striking out three and walking two.

Austin Haas pitched the sixth and Dylan Lillejord the seventh to preserve the win.

Lillejord, Domeier and Brandon Hill had two hits apiece as Madison outhit the Scarlets 9-4.

Madison returns to action on Sunday when it plays in Rosen against Ortonville starting at noon. The Scarlets host Minneota at 7 p.m. on Monday.

Montevideo’s 1-0 lead after the first inning quickly expanded to 6-0 after the second and 13-0 after the third. Eight different players notched a hit for Montevideo with Jeff Rohloff going 3-for-3 to drive in three runs.

Zac Enevoldsen supplied another two hits after Montevideo batted around in the second and sending up 11 batters in the third. Highlighting the seven-run third was a two-run triple from Austin Hiepler, an RBI double from Rohloff and an RBI single from Adam Kilibarda.

Marcus Kranz earlier lined a two-run single in the second.

Spencer Hildahl worked the first three innings on the mound to get the win, striking out three and surrendering Tracy’s two hits.

Montevideo has the weekend off before hosting Prinsburg at 7 p.m. on Monday.

Kerkhoven tried to dig out of a large hole in the seventh inning but couldn’t muster enough offense on Thursday.

Kerk’s Travis Lamecker hit a solo home run in the third inning, Brandon Dahl drove in two runs and Ian Caldwell had one RBI.

Kerkhoven plays host to Fairfax at 6 p.m. Monday at the KMS High School field.
