ESSIG — The Upper Midwest Classic couldn’t have started better for the Willmar American Legion baseball team.

Post 167 got a pair of wins in pool play Friday. They opened with a 7-1 victory against Omaha Gross. In Game 2, Willmar prevailed again, beating Plover (Wisconsin), 8-1.

In the first game, Willmar scored twice in the first inning and three times in the third to beat Omaha Gross. Hunter Magnuson tossed a three-hitter, striking out 13 and walking three, allowing one earned run.

Magnuson also was 1-for-2 at the plate with two walks and a run. Post 167’s offensive leader was Cayden Hansen. The lead-off hitter went 3-for-4 with a triple and a home run, scoring twice and driving in two runs. Sam Etterman was 2-for-4 with a triple, two runs and an RBI.

Willmar continues in pool play in the 16-team tournament at 12:30 p.m. Saturday in Searles. Post 167 plays Sleepy Eye. Then, bracket play begins later in the afternoon. The final rounds of the 16-team tournament are Sunday at Johnson Park in New Ulm.

Willmar 8, Plover 1

Led by a strong offensive effort from Ian Koosman, Willmar picked up its second win of the day, beating Plover (Wisconsin) at Essig.

Koosman scored three times, finishing 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles. Hunter Magnuson was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run while Dylan Arndorfer collected two hits, a run and an RBI.

Cayden Hansen drove in a run while also getting the complete-game victory. He struck out five while giving up just three hits and no walks.

Game 1: Glenwood-Lowry 1, BBE 0

Jacob Blair tossed a five-inning no-hitter in the first game of a doubleheader, leading Glenwood-Lowry past Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa at Marthaler Park in Glenwood.

Blair struck out five and did not walk a batter. Glenwood-Lowry made one error.

Blair also was 1-for-3 with a stolen base. Nathan Dell was 1-for-1 with a walk and a stolen base for Glenwood-Lowry.

Game 2: Glenwood-Lowry 4, BBE 2

Glenwood-Lowry scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning to sweep Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa at Marthaler Park in Glenwood.

Dylan Alexander went 1-for-2 with a home run, two runs, a walk and an RBI for Glenwood-Lowry. PJ Johnson got the pitching win, going all six innings. He struck out four, walked three and allowed three hits and one earned run.

Hunter Sobiech, Tanner Shleton and Luke Dingmann all had hits for BBE, which is sponsored by Brooten Post 288. Shelton doubled and walked twice. Dingmann got an RBI.

Montevideo 5, NLS 4

Montevideo earned the walk-off victory over New London-Spicer at Montevideo.

NLS broke a 3-3 tie with a run in the top of the seventh. Montevideo then scored with one out in the bottom half of the seventh.

Brady Snell went 4-for-4 with three runs, a double and an RBI for Montevideo. He also got the complete-game win, allowing six hits and one earned run.


Luke Knudsen was 2-for-3 with two runs, a walk and a stolen base and Riley Lessman was 2-for-3 with a walk and two RBI for NLS.
