Local Roundup: Bulldogs return to 5AA finals

PAYNESVILLE -- Running for 351 yards and five touchdowns, top-seeded Paynesville clinched a spot in the Section 5AA finals for the second straight year with a 46-0 shutout over fifth-seeded Eden Valley-Watkins on Saturday.

PAYNESVILLE - Running for 351 yards and five touchdowns, top-seeded Paynesville clinched a spot in the Section 5AA finals for the second straight year with a 46-0 shutout over fifth-seeded Eden Valley-Watkins on Saturday.

Zach Schroeder ran for a team-high 128 yards and two third-quarter touchdowns on 17 carries. Max Weidner had 82 rushing yards and a four-yard score on 14 attempts, and Daltin Christinsen had both a rushing touchdown and receiving touchdown in the Bulldogs' victory.

Paynesville's defense limited the visiting Eagles to 121 total yards and 5 of 13 on third-down conversions.

The Bulldogs will play second-seeded Minnewaska for the section championship at 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 2 at St. John's University.

Minnewaska 21, ACGC 7

Holding a 14-0 halftime lead, second-seeded Minnewaska was able to fend off third seed Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City for a 21-7 win in the Section 5AA semifinals on Saturday.

The Lakers got on the scoreboard first with a three-yard Tyson Meyer touchdown run in the second quarter. Before intermission, quarterback Ryan Amundson scored was would be the game-winning touchdown on a one-yard run.

In the third, the Falcons cut the gap to seven points after a three-yard touchdown run from Josh Kinzler, who was also the team's top receiver with 67 yards on four catches. Meyer cemented the Minnewaska victory with a 22-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

Meyer had a game-high 108 rushing yards on 23 attempts, leading a Lakers offense that outgained the Falcons 197-69 on the ground. Michael Trebil ran for an ACGC-best 63 rushing yards while also throwing for 118 yards on 9 of 24 passing.

The Lakers will take on top-seeded Paynesville in the section finals at 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 2 at St. John's University.

Top-seeded BOLD cemented its fifth straight trip to a section final following a 68-7 drubbing of four seed Ortonville Saturday in Olivia.

At 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 2 at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall, the Warriors will take on second seed Minneota for a state berth.

Minneota 35, Dawson-Boyd 14

Dawson-Boyd threatened with a pair of Bentley Boike touchdown runs in the third quarter to tie things with Minneota Saturday afternoon but the Vikings scored 21 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to earn their 24th win in a row.

Cole Sanow proved to be unstoppable for the Vikings, rushing for 226 yards and three touchdowns, including a pair in the fourth quarter to put the game on ice. He had plenty of help from Thomas Hennen, who ran 17 times for 149 yards with a pair of touchdowns. He logged the game's first touchdown and delivered the eventual game-winner from 13-yards out in the fourth quarter.

Boike finished the game with 99 yards and two touchdowns while Jake Lee completed 14 of his 24 passes for 148 yards.

Central Lakes Conference Championship

Willmar's Erica Schramm took first place in the one-meter dive at Saturday's Central Lakes Conference Championship held at Willmar High School.

Sartell finished the meet as the big winners, scoring 549 points, easily distancing second-place Brainerd's 358.

Willmar's Amanda Mathiasen also had a strong showing, taking second place as part of the 200-meter freestyle while adding third-place finishes in the 50-freestyle and 400-freestyle relay. She also took fourth place in the 100-freestyle.

In addition to her stint on the 200- and 400-freestyle relays, Ava Brogren also added a second place finish in the 100-breaststroke.
