Local Roundup: Cards shut down Prairie Centre

WILLMAR - Willmar goalie Savana Knutson posted her second-straight shutout and Serena Monson scored two goals as the Cardinals defeated Prairie Centre 4-0 in their final regular-season home game on Thursday at the Willmar Civic Center.

WILLMAR - Willmar goalie Savana Knutson posted her second-straight shutout and Serena Monson scored two goals as the Cardinals defeated Prairie Centre 4-0 in their final regular-season home game on Thursday at the Willmar Civic Center.

Monson scored unassisted at 5:42 of the first period, and she made it 2-0 Cards with a goal 12 seconds into the second period on an assist from Hannah Kobienia.

Bailey Olson upped the count to 3-0 with a goal about three minutes later on an assist from Mya Monson.

Natasha Turrubiates capped the scoring with a goal at 10:22 of the third period on an assist from Serena Monson.

Knutson turned back all 19 Prairie Centre shots, including 10 in the first period when Willmar was outshot 10-6..

The Cardinals improved to 9-14 overall. They play at Marshall at 7 p.m. Tuesday and then wrap up their regular-season schedule against River Lakes at 7:15 p.m. Thursday.

CLC Championships

The Brainerd boys and the Alexandria girls took first place in the Central Lakes Conference Championships on Thursday in Brainerd.

The Willmar boys and girls teams both placed fifth.

Ethan Haines was Willmar's top finisher in the Classic, placing 14th. In the Skate, Willmar's Andrew Haugen placed 15th.

In the girls Classic, Willmar's Parker Cook placed 15th and in the Skate, the Cardinals' Laura Christianson placed 10th.

The Cardinals are in action next against Alexandria at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Andes Tower.
