Local Roundup: NLS baseball team faces tough state test

WILLMAR - The New London-Spicer baseball understands how tough the grind can become as the Wildcats dig deeper into the postseason. Case in point: Needing two games to finally dispatch Luverne and wrap up the Section 3AA championship last week.

But their road to a state championship in their first Class AA state tournament appearance presents an even bolder underscore.

The unseeded Wildcats (18-5) open the Class AA tournament at 5:30 p.m. Thursday against Pierz at Dick Putz Field in St. Cloud.

Pierz (24-2) is the No. 2 seed and the Pioneers won the third-place trophy last season. They defeated last year's 3AA representative Paynesville 13-0 in the first round.

Also in NLS' bracket is No. 2-seed Belle Plaine (20-2), which was the Class A state runner-up last year.

Should the Wildcats somehow navigate those potential storms, a state championship game likely would include either defending state champion and No. 1 seed Minnehaha (24-2) or No. 4 seed Maple Lake (22-2), a 2016 semifinalist.
