WILLMAR - Plenty of teams excel offensively or defensively but Willmar's VFW team proved their dominance is dual-sided Friday evening against Benson.

Post 1639 racked up 18 runs as Jayden Dierenfeld and Jared Elkjer tossed a combined no-hitter in a game that only lasted 4-1/2 innings. Dierenfeld struck out every batter he faced aside from a pair of walks to Benson's Pat Minchow in his three-inning start. He paved the way for Elkjer who struck out two batters in as many innings.

Offensively, nine Willmar batters logged a hit including Drey Dirksen who went 2-for-3 with a double, three RBIs and three runs scored. Dierenfeld also helped his cause at the plate with a triple, two RBIs and a pair of runs.

Andy Schultz (2-for-4, double, two RBIs, three runs), Ashton Gregory (2-for-3, two RBIs, one run) and Tanner Bauman (2-for-4, three RBIs, one run) all finished with multi-hit games as well.

Willmar 8, La Crosse 3

Defense may very well win championships but poor defense can certainly cost teams regular season games and the La Crosse Loggers learned that the hard way Friday night.

The Willmar Stingers capitalized on three Logger errors in a seven-run seventh inning on the way to a big 8-3 win.

Marcus Still has been a menace on the basepaths all season and his speed caused the first of the three errors in the seventh inning, allowing him to take third base after swiping second base. He finished the day with a pair of stolen bases to bring his Northwoods League-leading mark to 23.

Still went on to score to tie the game at two but the Stingers kept the runs coming following two more errors, a two run single by Nate Sterijevski, a two-run double by Tyler Murray, and a pair of bases-loaded walks to make it an 8-2 game.

On the bump, Tyler Oldenberg looked like a new man in his second outing in a Stingers uniform. Oldenberg was shelled in his debut, a relief appearance June 26 against Mankato, but he took advantage of Friday's start with four strikeouts in five innings. He only allowed three hits and one walk, lowering his earned run average from 108.95 to 6.75.

Murray finished the day with a pair of doubles and three RBIs to lead the Stinger offense. Willmar edged La Crosse 9-7 in team hits.

The Stingers now move to 16-16 on the season. They'll head to Rochester to take on the Honkers Saturday.
