Marshall thrashes Cardinals

MARSHALL -- The collective shooting from the Willmar girls basketball team was just as cold as the temperature outside of the gymnasium Thursday as Marshall overwhelmed the Cardinals 58-26 in a non-conference game.

MARSHALL - The collective shooting from the Willmar girls basketball team was just as cold as the temperature outside of the gymnasium Thursday as Marshall overwhelmed the Cardinals 58-26 in a non-conference game.

Willmar was 11-for-43 (26 percent) from the field and managed to produce only seven points in the first half, a 3-pointer from Sarah Smith and two baskets down low from Heidi Sellmann.

Marshall, ranked 10th in the latest Minnesota Basketball News Class AAA poll, raced to a 36-7 lead at halftime en route to improving to 17-6. The loss dropped Willmar to 15-6.

“The name of the game was intensity,” said Willmar coach Dustin Carlson. “(Marshall) brought the attitude and we were sluggish. We were in shock with how hard they play.”

“(It’s) frustrating to see but we can bounce back (today) at Sauk Rapids if we bring the effort and right attitude.”

Smith made two more 3’s in the second half to finish with a team-high nine points. Next in the Willmar scoring column was Grace Sawyer with five points.

Marah Mulso had 20 points to lead a group of three Tigers that scored in double figures.

Willmar attempted only two free throws and pulled down 18 rebounds as it lost for the first time since Jan. 19. The Cardinals were averaging 55 points a game during a winning streak that Marshall ended at six.

Lexi Orlowski hooked a team-high six rebounds and Sellmann grabbed another four. Courtney Hanson added four steals.

After today’s road game the Cardinals won’t play again until next Friday at home against Brainerd.
